Wednesday May 30, 2018
Wednesday May 30, 2018
IN THIS REPEAT: An essay chat about a shorter work entitled "Lilies That Fester."
This is the fifteenth essay chat that is part of an occasional series focusing on the shorter works from C.S. Lewis. It was recorded back in 2012 and hasn't been shared since moving my audio hosting to PodBean.com. This chat explores "Lilies That Fester," an essay best found in The World's Last Night. William O'Flaherty spoke with Allyson Wieland about this piece. Allyson is the creator of CSL Book Club, an online resource for discussion questions for a number of books by C.S. Lewis.

(Re-Post) 13r Essay Chat - On Stories pt. 1 (Andrew Lazo)
Saturday May 26, 2018
Saturday May 26, 2018
IN THIS REPEAT: The first of a two-part essay chat on the shorter work by Lewis called "On Stories."
"On Stories" is the namesake essay in On Stories: And other Essays on Literature. William O'Flaherty spoke with Andrew Lazo back in 2012 about this shorter work by C.S. Lewis. Among the topics it explores is what makes a story pleasurable and why fairy tales do follow a strict logic. This is the first of a two-part episode on it (this first show alone is 20 minutes). Learn about when this essay was first published and some keys points made in the article in this first part. Next week's segment deals primarily with the issue of the importance of re-reading stories.

(Re-Post) 11-12r Essay Chat - The Vision of John Bunyan (Kevin Belmonte)
Wednesday May 23, 2018
Wednesday May 23, 2018
IN THIS REPEAT: An essay chat on the shorter work "The Vision of John Bunyan." The essay was first published on December 13, 1962.
"The Vision of John Bunyan" was the topic for my 11th and 12th essay chat back in 2012. For this re-release I combined the shows because together they are just over twenty minutes. Kevin Belmonte, who joined me for the third essay chat (and other shows) returned for this discussion. As always, in addition to exploring several key points in the article, you will learn background information about it, as well as related articles or books on a similar topic. "The Vision of John Bunyan" is best found in Selected Literary Essays (a title that was re-issued in paperback and made available in eBook for the first time in late 2013).

Monday May 21, 2018
IN THIS REPEAT: Here's another previous essay chat; this one on Meditation in a Toolshed.
"Meditation in a Toolshed" was the tenth essay chat William O'Flaherty did back in 2012. Dr. Bruce Edwards, Professor Emeritus of English and Africana Studies at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, is the guest for this discussion. "Meditation in a Toolshed" is a fairly short essay that is a favorite among Lewis scholars. It is best found in God in the Dock essay collection. Learn about the background to this shorter work from Lewis and a few of the key points made in it that will either introduce to this great piece or remind you about it.

Sunday May 13, 2018
IN THIS REPEAT: For the seventh essay chat I had Dr. Michael Ward discussing "Myth Become Fact."
"Myth Became Fact" was the seventh essay chat I produced back in 2012. Although not directly related to Easter, it does touch on some aspects of it. I had the pleasure of catching up with Dr. Michael Ward, author of The Narnia Code and other books for this discussion. Note that we had some recording problems and the audio quality unfortunately didn't come out as well as hoped. The essay is best found in God in the Dock.

Saturday May 05, 2018
Saturday May 05, 2018
IN THIS REPEAT: From the last event at Taylor University ...parts of the keynote talks from Taylor 2016 Colloquium.
Here's another podcast featuring content from the recent 2016 Taylor Colloquium. This time it's highlights from each of the three keynote addresses. That is, about fifteen minutes of the talks are provided in this show. You'll hear Diana Glyer first as she talks about the process of writing and how Lewis and Tolkien often differed. Next is Sornia Higgins' presentation on the life of Charles Williams and finally, the last third of this podcast comes from Colin Duriez's speech on the critical friendship of Lewis and Owen Barfield. Please note that the last talk by Colin is more difficult to understand, as the place it was recorded in was different than the others and it turned out worse than expected.
