(Re-Post) What Lewis NEVER Wrote (with William O’Flaherty)

00:0000:00

IN THIS REPEAT: A short talk I gave back in 2014 dealing with questionable quotations.

LewisNeverWrote.jpg

In this show I'm sharing a 20 minute academic paper I presented at Taylor University that was part of the 9th Frances White Ewbank Colloquium on C.S. Lewis & Friends and given on Friday, May 30, 2014. The presentation I did was on quotations falsely attributed to Lewis. It was called "What Lewis NEVER Wrote." Finally, when recording this talk I neglected to consider the fact that when I was advancing the PowerPoint presentation my recording device was too close to the computer...so you will unfortunately hear a lot of annoying clicks that I was unable to edit out of the audio. You can obtain the handout by the link below or scroll down to see the text.

(Re-Post) The Heart of Light (Dr. Charlie Starr)

00:0000:00

IN THIS REPEAT: I usually don't stray too far from material related to Lewis, but here's somewhat of an except. A fictional work by a Lewis scholar that had inspiration from him.

TheHeartofLight.jpg

I'm sharing an interview from respected C.S. Lewis scholar Dr. Charlie Starr, but it's not directly about Lewis. However, Charlie does announce news about upcoming articles related to Lewis towards the end of the show. However, the main focus is on a brand new fictional book that is influenced in part by Lewis and done in the vein of his Science Fiction trilogy. The book is called The Heart of Light: A Tale of Solomon Star and it is the first of what should be many great adventures. This is also different in another way, I had Dr. Crystal Hurd, a frequent guest on All About Jack conduct the interview. As you may remember she actually did another interview for me in 2013. It was a brief visit with Dr. Malcolm Guite.

(Re-Post) D.L. Moody: A Life (Kevin Belmonte)

00:0000:00

IN THIS REPEAT: Enjoy a previously released show about the life of D.L. Moody from an interview my friend Gina Dalfonzo did for me about a book that came out in 2014.

DLMoodyKevinBelmonte.jpg

This is a very different edition of All About Jack. Normally I share material more directly related to C.S. Lewis, but that’s not the case today. Instead I’m sharing an interview I asked Gina Dalfonzo to conduct on my behalf with Kevin Belmonte about his new book called D.L. Moody A Life: Innovator, Evangelist, World Changer. While we know of no direct influence Moody had on Lewis, we do know that Moody advocated what Lewis would later call “Mere Christianity.”

(Re-Post) Writing Tips from Lewis and Tolkien (King and Poe)

00:0000:00

IN THIS REPEAT: My last NEW episode - A chat with Drs. Don King and Hal Poe on writing.

King_and_Poe2_-_Writing_Tips.jpg
What can a person learn about how to improve one's writing from C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien? That was the subject Dr. Don King and Dr. Hal Poe addressed in a session I moderated to kick off a Creative Writing Festival held for high school students at Montreat College on March 31, 2017. This was held just prior to the start of and apart from the Inklings Fellowship Weekend Retreat. At the last minute it ended up being recorded and the results were better than expected, so I thought I'd share the enjoyable time I had with Don and Hal chatting about Lewis and Tolkien in relation to writing. Note that below is are links to an online list of Lewis' works as well as a handout that Dr. King makes reference to that you might find useful.

Feel free to leave questions or comments below. Next week Dr. Devin Brown will tackle Prince Caspian.

(Re-Post) Joy, part 2 (Abigail Santamaria)

00:0000:00

IN THIS REPEAT:

JOYpt2ABBY.jpgThis is the second and final part of an interview with Abigail Santamaria about her debut book; a biography on Joy Davidman simply entitled JOY. Be sure to listen to the first part if you haven't already. There is a link below to help you locate it quickly. In the first part the topics included how Abby became interested in Joy's life and about what the Davidman household was like growing up, as well as her first marriage to Bill Gresham. Today's show will look more at how Joy met Lewis, some factors that led to her divorce and how she ultimately married Lewis twice. While this covers a lot of ground it does not go into how Joy didn't always make the wisest decisions as a Christian, which is in the book.

(Re-post) Joy, part 1 (Abigail Santamaria)

00:0000:00

IN THIS REPEAT: The first of a two-part interview about the landmark biography on C.S. Lewis' wife, Joy Davidman.

JOYABBY.jpgWhile there have been various books on or related to the life story of Joy Davidman, an in-depth treatment has never been done. That is, until now.  Over a dozen years in the making, Abigail Santamaria's debut biography is simply called Joy. To say that Joy Davidman was just the wife of C.S. Lewis is to ignore her own accomplishments as a writer and the influence she had in several books by Lewis. In this first of a two part interview, the topics that William O'Flaherty spoke with the author about include how she became interested in Joy's life and about what the Davidman household was like growing up, as well as her first marriage to Bill Gresham. The next part will look more at how Joy met Lewis, some factors that led to her divorce and how she ultimately married Lewis twice.

(Re-Post) C. S. Lewis and the Art of Writing (Dr. Corey Latta)

00:0000:00

IN THIS REPEAT: An episode about writing, a book from Dr. Corey Latta entitled C.S. Lewis and the Art of Writing

CSL_and_the_Art_of_Writing.jpgYou obviously know that C.S. Lewis was a writer, but did you know that he wrote a good deal of advice on writing? That's the focus of this podcast interview about a book called C.S. Lewis and the Art of Writing. The author is Dr. Corey Latta and in this book he's broken that advice down into fifty bit-size chapters that also gives some optional exercises to help you put that advice into practice. The book has a biographical tone to it, so even if you are not a writer you can still enjoy it. Plus, some of the tips on writing can be applied to other creative endeavors.

(Re-Post) Women and C.S. Lewis (Carolyn Curtis)

00:0000:00

IN THIS REPEAT: An interview from 2015 about a book by various authors focusing on Lewis' relationship with women.

WomenandCSLewis.jpg
Does C.S. Lewis's life and his writings have anything to say to our world today, especially in relation to females? That's the very issue Women and C.S. Lewis aims to tackle. It does so by gathering together a variety of scholars and thinkers (both men and women) who are very familiar with Lewis to, as its subtitle says, find "what his life and literature reveal for today's culture." William O'Flaherty spoke with Carolyn Curtis, one of the co-editors of the book about this new release for 2015. Contributors include many who have been guests before on the podcast: Dr. Devin Brown, Colin Duriez, Dr. David Downing, Andrew Lazo, Dr. Crystal Hurd, Paul McCusker, Dr. Holly Ordway, Dr. Michael Ward, Dr. Alister McGrath, Dr. Don King and Revd Dr. Malcolm Guite.
