IN THIS REPEAT: There are a lot of biographies on Tolkien. Back in 2014 I shared about a SHORT one that is written by Dr. Devin Brown, author of several popular books on Narnia and Middle Earth.
Dr. Devin Brown is back with another book about C.S. Lewis's (more famous) friend, J.R.R. Tolkien. This one is a brief biography simply called Tolkien. At the time I'm releasing this podcast, the final part of the movie version of The Hobbit will be out in a few weeks. Learn, or be reminded of, the interesting story of how Tolkien went from being "an obscure Oxford Professor" to "become the most beloved author of the century."

C.S. Lewis had many friends...the most famous was J.R.R. Tolkien, whom he worked with for many years at Oxford University. Just as with Lewis, there are many misconceptions about Tolkien. One is that he "read very little modern fiction, and took no serious notice of it." Dr. Holly Ordway has studied the issue for many years and discovered Tolkien was much more aware of modern culture and the inspiration for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings was not only medieval. She joined William O'Flaherty for a podcast interview to share her insightful findings. Dr. Lisa Coutras also joined the show to help with co-hosting.

The Lion’s Country: C.S. Lewis’s Theory of the Real (released in December 2022) by Charlie Starr is somewhat of a follow-up to The Faun’s Bookshelf (released in 2018). In this podcast interview with William O’Flaherty, Charlie first explains the difference between the two, before providing a brief glimpse into The Lion’s Country itself. While the topic deals with deep philosophical issues, Charlie’s book (and the interview) provides clear and understandable explanations for the average person that those versed in the topic can appreciate. In addition to listening to the podcast version, you can also watch the same interview via YouTube (see below).

Lewis examines these early years and shows how his youth influenced his later life and writings. This podcast interview features Dr. Poe explaining how he came to write this book (the first of three) and why knowing Jack Lewis (his friends called him "Jack") is best understood by exploring his formative years.

Wade Center came together to release a small, but meaningful booklet entitled The Grand Miracle: Daily Reflections for the Season of Advent. It contains 28 devotions written by as many authors that contain a Scripture quotation, as well as a quotation from either C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dorthy L. Sayers, George MacDonald, G.K. Chesterton, Charles Williams, Owen Barfield, or Joy Davidman. William O'Flaherty spoke with Dr. Jennifer Woodruff Tait (managing editor of Christian History) about this Advent devotion that can offer an inspiring look at the birth of Christ at any time of the year.
