200 Seconds in Hell with C.S. Lewis Episode 4
Tuesday Feb 14, 2017
Tuesday Feb 14, 2017

Do words matter? Of course they do! That's why Screwtape tells Wormwood to either suggest more negative sounding terms or expressions that people associate with things they don't like. Words like "complacency," "unselfishness" and "Puritanical" are help for Hell's purposes. In this four episode of "200 Seconds in Hell with C.S. Lewis" you'll be reminded about some of the ways the devils try to twist words to make it a weapon for their gain.
2017 is the 75th anniversary of when The Screwtape Letters was first published. So, why not read it again! And consider getting my enhanced study guide to help you enjoy it even more. Get a free 20 page PDF sample of my book via ScrewtapeCompanion.com.

(Re-Post) C. S. Lewis and the Art of Writing (Dr. Corey Latta)
Monday Feb 13, 2017
Monday Feb 13, 2017
IN THIS REPEAT: The last new episode about a book from Dr. Corey Latta entitled C.S. Lewis and the Art of Writing.
You obviously know that C.S. Lewis was a writer, but did you know that he wrote a good deal of advice on writing? That's the focus of this podcast interview about a book called C.S. Lewis and the Art of Writing. The author is Dr. Corey Latta and in this book he's broken that advice down into fifty bit-size chapters that also gives some optional exercises to help you put that advice into practice. The book has a biographical tone to it, so even if you are not a writer you can still enjoy it. Plus, some of the tips on writing can be applied to other creative endeavors.

IN THIS REPEAT: Another essay chat - this on "Willings Slaves of the Welfare State" with Dr. Crystal Hurd.
Back in April 2012 I began an occasional series of essay chats. Each of these podcasts examine a single shorter work that C.S. Lewis wrote with the hopes of encourage you to read or re-read it. As "Willing Slaves of the Welfare State" is repeated with this show, I find it hard to believe that I actually did sixteen over a seven month span. Of course, back then my program wasn't very old and this was a fairly easy way to create a new podcast. My guest for this essay chat is a familiar name; Dr. Crystal Hurd has been on the show many times. Crystal is an educator and researcher from Virginia who is currently researching the role of artists as leaders. The essay discussed can most easily be found in God in the Dock.

IN THIS REPEAT: An essay chat about a shorter work entiltled "Lilies That Fester."
This is the fifteenth essay chat that is part of an occasional series focusing on the shorter works from C.S. Lewis. It was recorded back in 2012 and hasn't been shared since moving my audio hosting to PodBean.com. This chat explores "Lilies That Fester," an essay best found in The World's Last Night. William O'Flaherty spoke with Allyson Wieland about this piece. Allyson is the creator of CSL Book Club, an online resource for discussion questions for a number of books by C.S. Lewis.

(Re-Post) Both Sides of the Wardrobe (Rob Fennell)
Tuesday Jan 31, 2017
Tuesday Jan 31, 2017
IN THIS REPEAT: Both Sides of the Wardrobe is a book edited by Rob Fennell. This episode is from March 2016.
The Narnia stories are easily the most popular writings from C.S. Lewis. He did, of course, release many other works that are also enjoyed. To help others enjoy and/or learn about the variety of books from Lewis Rob Fennell had a conference in Canada in 2013 with various speakers to address "Both Sides of the Wardrobe." This resulted in a book that was released in late 2015 called Both Sides of the Wardrobe. William O'Flaherty recently spoke with him about this title for the All About Jack podcast. Most of the authors will be new to listeners, but Brenton Dickieson, one of them, has been on the show many times.

Sunday Jan 29, 2017
IN THIS REPEAT: The latest (3rd) episode of "200 Seconds in Hell"

Practicing humility can be a very humbling experience, one that might just lead to pride! At least that's what Wormwood is partly told he should try to make happen with his patient in The Screwtape Letters. In this third episode of "200 Seconds in Hell with C.S. Lewis" you'll be reminded about some of the ways the devils try to twist humility to make it a weapon for their gain.

(Re-Post) - America Discovers C.S. Lewis (Dr. K. Alan Snyder)
Sunday Jan 29, 2017
Sunday Jan 29, 2017
IN THIS REPEAT: The last new interview I did; about the book America Discovers C.S. Lewis by Dr. Alan Snyder.
If you live in the United States, then you are probably not too surprised to know that a lot of people here know about C.S. Lewis. Did you know it was first an American who helped to tell the world about him? That's just a small part of what you'll find in a book called America Discovers C.S. Lewis by history professor, Dr. Alan Snyder. Alan also explores the contrast between a young C.S. Lewis who had negative views about the U.S. and a more mature Lewis who married an American, along with telling about a variety of individuals who have been profoundly impacted by his life and writings.

IN THIS REPEAST: Here's a chat I had in early 2016 with Mark Neal, the co-author of The Surprising Imagination of C.S. Lewis.
Previously William O'Flaherty spoke with Dr. Jerry Root about The Surprising Imagination of C.S. Lewis before the book was available to own. What follows is a conversation with the other co-author of the work, Mark Neal. This podcast covers more specifically what is in the combined effort from Root and Neal. Detailed examples are given from each of the two major sections of the book in addition to providing further information about the remarkable imagination Lewis had and how you can develop your's better.
