15r Essay Chat - Lilies That Fester (Allyson Wieland)
Monday Feb 29, 2016
Monday Feb 29, 2016
This is the fifteenth essay chat that is part of an occasional series focusing on the shorter works from C.S. Lewis. It was recorded back in 2012 and hasn't been shared since moving my audio hosting to PodBean.com. This chat explores "Lilies That Fester," an essay best found in The World's Last Night. William O'Flaherty spoke with Allyson Wieland about this piece. Allyson is the creator of CSL Book Club, an online resource for discussion questions for a number of books by C.S. Lewis.

(Re-Post) What Lewis NEVER Wrote (with William O'Flaherty)
Friday Feb 26, 2016
Friday Feb 26, 2016

In this show I'm sharing a 20 minute academic paper I presented at Taylor University that was part of the 9th Frances White Ewbank Colloquium on C.S. Lewis & Friends and given on Friday, May 30, 2014. The presentation I did was on quotations falsely attributed to Lewis. It was called "What Lewis NEVER Wrote." Finally, when recording this talk I neglected to consider the fact that when I was advancing the PowerPoint presentation my recording device was too close to the computer...so you will unfortunately hear a lot of annoying clicks that I was unable to edit out of the audio. You can obtain the handout by the link below or scroll down to see the text.

(Re-Post) Preacher Lewis - 75 Years Later (William O'Flaherty)
Thursday Feb 25, 2016
Thursday Feb 25, 2016

The following is not an interview, but a talk that I recent gave in TN at the C.S. Lewis Society of Chattanooga. The topic is about when Lewis spoke at church. He gave his first sermon 75 years ago…the debut was in 1939. I provide an overview of what we know about the times he preached and greater details about his first, last and best messages.

(Re-Post) The Heart of Light (Dr. Charlie Starr)
Wednesday Feb 24, 2016
Wednesday Feb 24, 2016

I'm sharing an interview from respected C.S. Lewis scholar Dr. Charlie Starr, but it's not directly about Lewis. However, Charlie does announce news about upcoming articles related to Lewis towards the end of the show. However, the main focus is on a brand new fictional book that is influenced in part by Lewis and done in the vein of his Science Fiction trilogy. The book is called The Heart of Light: A Tale of Solomon Star and it is the first of what should be many great adventures. This is also different in another way, I had Dr. Crystal Hurd, a frequent guest on All About Jack conduct the interview. As you may remember she actually did another interview for me in 2013. It was a brief visit with Dr. Malcolm Guite.

Not a Tame Lion (Terry Glaspey) 2016r
Monday Feb 22, 2016
Monday Feb 22, 2016
Not a Tame Lion is the name of a book that was published by Terry Glaspey back in 1996. Since then has been re-released twice. The cover you see here is the most recent edition. William O'Flaherty caught up with Terry back in 2011 during a conference about Lewis. While not too much of the conversation focuses on the book itself, Terry offers useful information related to Lewis in this short interview.

(Re-Post) D.L. Moody: A Life (Kevin Belmonte)
Monday Feb 22, 2016
Monday Feb 22, 2016

This is a very different edition of All About Jack. Normally I share material more directly related to C.S. Lewis, but that’s not the case today. Instead I’m sharing an interview I asked Gina Dalfonzo to conduct on my behalf with Kevin Belmonte about his new book called D.L. Moody A Life: Innovator, Evangelist, World Changer. While we know of no direct influence Moody had on Lewis, we do know that Moody advocated what Lewis would later call “Mere Christianity.”

(Re-Post) C.S. Lewis Society of California
Sunday Feb 21, 2016
Sunday Feb 21, 2016
C.S. Lewis societies have existed for a number of years. They range in size from a few dozen or less members to hundreds of members. Some have been around for a short time and others have decades of longevity behind them. Based out of Oakland in the U.S., the C.S. Lewis Society of California has been around for many years. It is an independent, non-profit, Christian, educational and cultural organization interested in events, publications, and other developments that advance deeper understanding of the enduring philosophical, cultural, historical, literary, spiritual, social, and economic issues of mankind. William O'Flaherty recently spoke with David Theroux, the president of the group.

(Re-Post) An Inklings Week in Oxford 2016
Saturday Feb 20, 2016
Saturday Feb 20, 2016
There are many ways to learn more about the writings and life of C.S. Lewis and his Inklings friends. The following interview tells about one great way: visit the area where they lived and discuss their writings with those who know them well. Dr. Hal Poe and Dr. Don King join William O'Flaherty to tell about AN INKLINGS WEEK IN OXFORD that is Sunday evening, July 17 - Friday evening, July 22, 2016. Speakers include Colin Duriez, Michael Ward, Don King, Harry Lee (Hal) Poe, Walter Hooper, and Holly Ordway. There is a special discount code mentioned during the podcast, so listen to it to save up to $150 (note: airfare, lodging and meals are extra). Also, there are more details (three additional minutes) about the LOST recording of C.S. Lewis that Hal discovered. Finally, be sure to follow the link below to hear the only surviving recording of Lewis from the BBC series of talk that became Mere Christianity (note: this is NOT the lost recording). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Re-Post) 11-12r Essay Chat - The Vision of John Bunyan (Kevin Belmonte)
Friday Feb 19, 2016
Friday Feb 19, 2016
"The Vision of John Bunyan" was the topic for my 11th and 12th essay chat back in 2012. For this re-release I combined the shows because together they are just over twenty minutes. Kevin Belmonte, who joined me for the third essay chat (and other shows) returned for this discussion. As always, in addition to exploring several key points in the article, you will learn background information about it, as well as related articles or books on a similar topic. "The Vision of John Bunyan" is best found in Selected Literary Essays (a title that was re-issued in paperback and made available in eBook for the first time in late 2013).~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Re-Post) EC10r - Meditation in a Toolshed (Dr. Bruce Edwards)
Thursday Feb 18, 2016
Thursday Feb 18, 2016

"Meditation in a Toolshed" was the tenth essay chat William O'Flaherty did back in 2012. Dr. Bruce Edwards, Professor Emeritus of English and Africana Studies at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, is the guest for this discussion. "Meditation in a Toolshed" is a fairly short essay that is a favorite among Lewis scholars. It is best found in God in the Dock essay collection. Learn about the background to this shorter work from Lewis and a few of the key points made in it that will either introduce to this great piece or remind you about it.
