C.S. Lewis had many friends...the most famous was J.R.R. Tolkien, whom he worked with for many years at Oxford University. Just as with Lewis, there are many misconceptions about Tolkien. One is that he "read very little modern fiction, and took no serious notice of it." Dr. Holly Ordway has studied the issue for many years and discovered Tolkien was much more aware of modern culture and the inspiration for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings was not only medieval. She joined William O'Flaherty for a podcast interview to share her insightful findings. Dr. Lisa Coutras also joined the show to help with co-hosting.

Tolkien’s Faith: A Spiritual Biography (released September 2, 2023) by Holly Ordway takes a deep dive in how Tolkien’s Catholic faith was a central part of his life. In this first of a two-part interview, Holly tells William O’Flaherty about why such a “narrow” focus is justified, what is especially important to know about the first twenty years of Tolkien’s life and the forty year span BEFORE The Lord of the Rings was published. Additionally, Holly explains why the book is arranged into three major sections and why she provides explanations about Catholicism.

IN THIS REPEAT: Here's a reminder of my occasional essay chat series with this re-post of the first one I did with Dr. Holly Ordway. Many people overlook the fact that Lewis work many shorter works. His essays are very enjoyable and cover a range of topics.
The following is a repeat of the debut series I've simply called an "essay chat." For those not familiar with it, the purpose of this program is to focus on a single essay (or similar shorter work) by C.S. Lewis and discuss it with another Lewis expert or enthusiast. This first one was done with Dr. Holly Ordway on the essay "Sometimes Fairy Stories Say Best What's to be Said."

IN THIS REPEAT: My show with Dr. Holly Ordway about new new apologetics book.
New for 2017 is a book by Dr. Holly Ordway entitled Apologetics and the Christian Imagination: An Integrated Approach to Defending the Faith. This podcast interview gives an overview of Holly’s belief that both reason and imagination should be used for the most effective defense of the Christian faith. She has previously been on All About Jack for a couple of “Essay Chat” podcasts and co-hosted a series dealing with The Narnia Code, and talking about her spiritual autobiography Not God’s Type.
