(Re-Post) Writing Outside of the Inner Ring (Corey Latta)
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
IN THIS REPEAT: My most recent new episode about a talk Corey Latta gave in June 2018.
- - - -
Dr. Corey Latta, author of C.S. Lewis and the Art of Writing, gave a talk at The Marion E. Wade Center during the recent 2018 C.S. Lewis Institute Summer Conference. "Writing Outside of the Inner Ring" is the revised title he told me when giving me permission to share his presentation. While sharing candidly about his own experiences, he uses Lewis's essay, "The Inner Ring" and several letters from 1930 to talk about motivation for writing (and other creative endeavors) and how to stay focused during times of discouragement.

Sunday Jun 13, 2021
Sunday Jun 13, 2021
In this repeat: The first news from last December (2015) about the discovery of a lost recording from Lewis.

Incredible news of a LOST recording of C.S. Lewis was mentioned as part of an upcoming interview with Dr. Hal Poe about An Inklings Week in Oxford. During the conversation it was revealed that Christianity Today will soon post an article about Hal's discovery of a previously unknown recording C.S. Lewis did before his radio talks on the BBC. When the article for Christianity Today post I'll post a link below. Also, be sure to catch the entire interview with Hal (and guest Dr. Don King) about the retreat in Oxford where you can hear the actual recording that was found. Listen to the portion of the interview about the lost recording in this special advanced excerpt.

(Re-Post) Writing Tips from Lewis and Tolkien (King and Poe)
Tuesday Jun 08, 2021
Tuesday Jun 08, 2021
IN THIS REPEAT: A chat with Drs. Don King and Hal Poe on writing.
What can a person learn about how to improve one's writing from C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien? That was the subject Dr. Don King and Dr. Hal Poe addressed in a session I moderated to kick off a Creative Writing Festival held for high school students at Montreat College on March 31, 2017. This was held just prior to the start of and apart from the Inklings Fellowship Weekend Retreat. At the last minute it ended up being recorded and the results were better than expected, so I thought I'd share the enjoyable time I had with Don and Hal chatting about Lewis and Tolkien in relation to writing. Note that below is are links to an online list of Lewis' works as well as a handout that Dr. King makes reference to that you might find useful.

The Making of C.S. Lewis, pt. 1 (Dr. Hal Poe)
Thursday Jun 03, 2021
Thursday Jun 03, 2021
Dr. Harry Lee Poe ("Hal" to his friends) is back as a guest on the podcast to tell about his new (for 2021) book, The Making of C.S. Lewis (1918–1945): From Atheist to Apologist. This is the first of a two-part show about that title. Previously, Hal released Becoming C.S. Lewis, a book that covered the first twenty years of his life. The Making of C.S. Lewis explores what was happening in Lewis' life from the end of WWI to the end of WWII. As the subtitle notes, Lewis was an atheist at the start of this period and less than thirty years later was famous for his defense of Christianity. Of course, a lot happened between those years, including Lewis giving up being a poet, the start of his teaching at Oxford, and publishing several fictional works.

C.S. Lewis is most known for his stories about Narnia that are found in seven books, but did you know he did a science-fiction trilogy prior to them? Christina Hale, author of Deeper Heaven: A Reader's Guide to C. S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, wants to not only make sure you are aware of those three books by Lewis but that you better understand them. She fell in love with Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength as an undergraduate and eventually did her Master's thesis on them. That laid the foundation for her book that is new for 2021. Learn more about the book in this podcast interview.

(Re-Post) Tolkien (Dr. Devin Brown)
Thursday May 20, 2021
Thursday May 20, 2021
IN THIS REPEAT: There are a lot of biographies on Tolkien. Back in 2014 I shared about a SHORT one that is written by Dr. Devin Brown, author of several popular books on Narnia and Middle Earth.
Dr. Devin Brown is back with another book about C.S. Lewis's (more famous) friend, J.R.R. Tolkien. This one is a brief biography simply called Tolkien. At the time I'm releasing this podcast, the final part of the movie version of The Hobbit will be out in a few weeks. Learn, or be reminded of, the interesting story of how Tolkien went from being "an obscure Oxford Professor" to "become the most beloved author of the century."

Tuesday May 18, 2021
Tuesday May 18, 2021
IN THIS REPEAT: My Interview with Donald T. Williams that explores the theology of C.S. Lewis.
While C.S. Lewis is known for being outspoken about his Christian faith, it's difficult to find specifics about what he believed in some aspects of Theology. This is not unusual because he wasn't a Theologian, even though he did manage to help many understand various theological issues. Fortunately, a new book by Dr. Donald T. Williams, entitled Deeper Magic: The Theology Behind the Writings of C.S. Lewis tackles the topic. This podcast interview provides an overview of his book that not only summarizes Lewis' views but also gives an analysis of them. Dr. Williams has previously been on All About Jack with a couple of podcasts featuring two different talks that related to the subject.

What is the "best tool" in the Devil's toolbox? You might be surprised that it is the opposite of what you think it might be! Screwtape reveals the secret outright in the fourth letter, but the method is mentioned either directly or indirectly in 75% of the letters. This sixth episode of "200 Seconds in Hell with C.S. IN THIS REPEAT: An essay chat on the shorter work by Lewis called "On Three Ways of Writing for Children."
This week is the final "catch-up" of a previous essay chat that hadn't yet been re-released since changing podcast hosting to Podbean in late 2014. In the early 1950's Lewis began releasing a series of books that he is most associated with now. Lewis gave a talk in 1952 when less than half of his Narnia stories were published. The name of the essay version is "On Three Ways of Writing for Children." Brenton Dickieson, a frequent podcast guest explores this shorter work with host William O'Flaherty. The best place to find the article version is in a collection called On Stories.
