(Re-Post) Between Heaven & Hell - The Film (Jim Buchholz)
Thursday Jul 14, 2016
Thursday Jul 14, 2016
In this repeat: One final reminder about a movie that needs your support July 23rd.
Is death the end of life? What if three people who died on the same day had a chance to discuss this? As you might know, on November 22, 1963 John F. Kennedy, C.S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley died. The book Between Heaven and Hell provides an imaginary conversation between the three who viewed life very differently. So, what would they talk about? Jim Buchholz wants to take this fascinating approach and make a big screen movie out of it. He has secured the rights to the book, has a screenplay and crew all ready and now needs some funding to move it forward. How will the movie be different from the book in a good way? Why does Jim believe he has the experience to make it? These and other questions are answered in the interview.

(Re-Post) Joy, both parts (Abigail Santamaria)
Wednesday Jul 13, 2016
Wednesday Jul 13, 2016
In this repeat: Last summer I shared a two-part interview about a new biography on Joy Davidman; here's BOTH parts.
While I just released my interview with Abigail Santamaria in two parts, due to the popularity of those shows it seems there are those who would like the convenience of having them combined. So, that's what this episode is, simply both chats in a single show. While nothing new has been added, the ending from the first part and introduction of the second has been removed (thus both shows together are shorter than the two combined). As noted previously, this is the first book from Abigail Santamaria and its the first full-length biography on Joy Davidman, who was an accomplished writer before she married C.S. Lewis. Some of the topics explored in this interview with William O'Flaherty include how Abigail became interested in Joy's life and about what the Davidman household was like growing up, Joy's first marriage to Bill Gresham, how Joy met Lewis, some factors that led to her divorce and how she ultimately married Lewis twice.

Joy and Poetic Imagination (Dr. Stephen Thorson)
Monday Jul 11, 2016
Monday Jul 11, 2016
Before Lewis embraced the Christian faith he had a lengthy debate with one of his friends, Owen Barfield about what would be considered involving subtle metaphysical and philosophical distinctions. It became know as the "Great War." These disagreements impacted Lewis a lot, but this topic isn't often explored with much detail in biographies. Joy and Poetic Imagination: Understanding C. S. Lewis's "Great War" with Owen Barfield and its Significance for Lewis's Conversion and Writings is a book by Dr. Stephen Thorson that examines the issue thoroughly. The following podcast is a brief interview with Stephen as well as a short talk he gave at the 2016 Taylor Colloquium.

(Re-Post) Another Anniversary Reflections on The Screwtape Letters
Sunday Jul 10, 2016
Sunday Jul 10, 2016
In this repeat: the last new show; a second anniversary reflection on Screwtape.
Previously I did a podcast featuring a variety of guest reflecting on The Screwtape Letters. I'm doing that again today with six more individuals. The reason for this, in addition to The Screwtape Letters being my favorite book from Lewis, is the fact that it was 75 years ago this month (July) that Lewis wrote the original preface to his landmark work. Follow the link to the previous show to learn more background about the book. Comments today are from Dr. Michael Ward, Dr. Jim Buchholz, Sarah Waters, Rob Fennell, Peter S. Williams, Dr. Don Williams. For those who have websites you can follow the links below to learn more about them.

(Re-Post) The Screwtape Letters: Annotated Edition (2016R)
Saturday Jul 09, 2016
Saturday Jul 09, 2016
In this repeat: The final in a week focusing mostly on Screwtape...an annotated edition!
Back in 2014 I first released this interview with Paul McCusker about The Screwtape Letters: Annotated Edition that had only been release a few months before that show was posted. I had yet to share this conversation again since moving my podcast hosting to Podbean, so it has been unavailable for awhile. This year (2016) is the 75th anniversary of the letters first appearing in a small church publication before they came out in book form in the UK in 1942. So, it seem especially important to share interview again because of this fact. Learn how Paul became involved in this project and what information you will and won't see in it.

In this repeat: Is there a connection between Ransom and Screwtape?
Here's another short talk presented at the 2016 Colloquium at Taylor University. This one is from Brenton Dickieson, best known for his website A Pilgrim in Narnia. The full title of his paper was "When Screwtape Haunts in Eden: Testing the Possibilities of the Screwtape-Ransom Speculative Universe." A key part of what he shares is about how The Screwtape Letters may actually fit into the "Ransom fictional universe." Brenton has been on my podcast, All About Jack, several times before (see links below).

(Re-Post) Shining Light on Screwtape’s Darkest Secret (William O'Flaherty)
Thursday Jul 07, 2016
Thursday Jul 07, 2016
I just gave the following talk on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Inklings Fellowship Weekend Retreat that was held in Montreat, NC at Montreat College. It was also the public debut of my first book C.S. Lewis Goes to Hell: A Companion and Study Guide to The Screwtape Letters. While I do give a summary of the unique aspects of my book, the main focus of the talk is about the devils' secret weapon that is mentioned in nearly all of the letters. My book just list them, but this presentation provides more details and gives a practical application to one's life. Visit my website to contact me about giving this talk or a three or four part presentation on all of the places this weapon is mentioned or alluded to.

In this repeat: In honor of Lewis writing the preface to the book of The Screwtape Letters 75 years ago this month, here's my most recent talk (a short one) about the book.
In this repeat: Here's the talk I recent did that was just posted less than a week ago.
I just gave the following short talk on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Taylor University Colloquium. My brief presentation was part of a variety of academic papers that was presented there. In it I explore the 13th through the 17th letters from The Screwtape Letters to reveal where an often overlooked "preferred method" of the devils is suggested. Previously I spoke on the initial twelve letters (see link below) when I gave a keynote address at the Inklings Fellowship Weekend Retreat at Montreat College. The material from both is adapted and an expansion of material from my first book, C.S. Lewis Goes to Hell: A Companion and Study Guide to The Screwtape Letters. While I do give a summary of the unique aspects of my book, the main focus of the talk is about the devils' "preferred method" to keep us from living up to God's potential. Visit my website to contact me about giving this talk or a three or four part presentation on all of the places this method is mentioned or alluded to.

(Re-Post) Keynote Highlights Taylor Colloquium 2016
Sunday Jul 03, 2016
Sunday Jul 03, 2016
In this repeat: My last new show featuring parts of the keynotes from Taylor 2016
Here's another podcast featuring content from the recent 2016 Taylor Colloquium. This time it's highlights from each of the three keynote addresses. That is, about fifteen minutes of the talks are provided in this show. You'll hear Diana Glyer first as she talks about the process of writing and how Lewis and Tolkien often differed. Next is Sornia Higgins' presentation on the life of Charles Williams and finally, the last third of this podcast comes from Colin Duriez's speech on the critical friendship of Lewis and Owen Barfield. Please note that the last talk by Colin is more difficult to understand, as the place it was recorded in was different than the others and it turned out worse than expected.

(Re-Post) Discussing Mere Christianity (Dr. Devin Brown)
Friday Jul 01, 2016
Friday Jul 01, 2016
In this repeat: Details about an eight week guide to Mere Christianity
Saying Mere Christianity is a book that has influence millions of people would not only be obvious, but also an understatement! Yet, despite it's nearly universal appeal, there are those who have difficulty "getting into it." This might be because the material is over 70 years old (they were first radio talks in the 1940's) and they were mostly aimed at a British audience. That was part of the motivation behind the creation of Discussing Mere Christianity that is available as an eight-part video and study guide (each can be purchased separately or together). The DVD is hosted by Eric Metaxas and the study guide was written by Dr. Devin Brown. While not an in-depth study, it focuses on key aspects of Lewis's landmark book. Various experts lead the actual sessions that are just under 25 minutes. They are Dr. Alister McGrath, Dr. Jerry Root, Philip Yancey, Dr. Diana Glyer, Dr. Joseph Pearce and Dr. Devin Brown.
