IN THIS REPEAT: An essay chat on the shorter work by Lewis called "On Three Ways of Writing for Children."

On_Three_Ways_of_Writing_for_Children.jp This week is the final "catch-up" of a previous essay chat that hadn't yet been re-released since changing podcast hosting to Podbean in late 2014. In the early 1950's Lewis began releasing a series of books that he is most associated with now. Lewis gave a talk in 1952 when less than half of his Narnia stories were published. The name of the essay version is "On Three Ways of Writing for Children." Brenton Dickieson, a frequent podcast guest explores this shorter work with host William O'Flaherty. The best place to find the article version is in a collection called On Stories.

Back in 2013 there were several events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of C.S. Lewis. The key celebrations of his life were held in England and centered around a special event known as C.S. Lewis at Poets' Corner. Now a book has been released sharing the updated transcripts of the talks, the memorial service, the Cambridge Conference and more. Returning guest Dr. Michael Ward spoke about the book that he and Peter S. Williams co-edited.

No doubt you have heard about the new biography C.S. Lewis - A Life by Dr. Alister McGrath. Dr. McGrath is a priest ordained in the Church of England and Professor of Theology, Ministry and Education at King's College London. Formerly he was Professor of Historical Theology at Oxford University. I was granted one of the few interviews with him last week on March 20th (2013) just hours before he spoke at Wheaton College.

Do words matter? Of course they do! That's why Screwtape tells Wormwood to either suggest more negative sounding terms or expressions that people associate with things they don't like. Words like "complacency," "unselfishness" and "Puritanical" are help for Hell's purposes. In this four episode of "200 Seconds in Hell with C.S. Welcome to the premier episode of the podcast "200 Seconds in Hell with C.S. Lewis." It focuses on highlighting the classic book The Screwtape Letters. The first show, however, serves more as an introduction to the type of information that will normally be covered. Being a podcast you need to click the link above to hear it. For the moment I'm including it on my All About Jack podcast feed, so you can follow it either on my Podbean page or via my iTunes feeds (see links below).

This series will be short-term. That is, while I'm not sure how many episodes will be done, it won't go on forever.

C.S. Lewis had many friends...the most famous was J.R.R. Tolkien, whom he worked with for many years at Oxford University. Just as with Lewis, there are many misconceptions about Tolkien. One is that he "read very little modern fiction, and took no serious notice of it." Dr. Holly Ordway has studied the issue for many years and discovered Tolkien was much more aware of modern culture and the inspiration for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings was not only medieval. She joined William O'Flaherty for a podcast interview to share her insightful findings. Dr. Lisa Coutras also joined the show to help with co-hosting.

This is actual the FIFTH (and final) podcast to honor the legacy of Walter Hooper. He died on December 7, 2020. While it is the second show for the All About Jack podcast, two other podcasters have done some shows reflecting on the life and image of Hooper (see links below). Some are unaware that he was THE key person in making sure several books published by Lewis before his death stayed in print, as well as collecting and releasing new material that many enjoy today. In this episode, you will hear from a handful of people who knew Walter reflecting on some of their interactions with him (see the list below).

Most are aware he served as the Literary Executor of the C.S. Lewis Estate for many years. As you will hear in this episode, Walter was THE key person in making sure several books published by Lewis before his death stayed in print, as well as collecting and releasing new material that many enjoy today. "Learning in War-Time" is an essay by C.S. Lewis that has application beyond its original context. This is why it was selected for my occasional podcast series focusing on a single shorter work by him. Dr. K. Alan Snyder joined William O'Flaherty to discuss this insightful essay. Dr. Snyder is a historian and has written a variety of books in that realm, in addition to the 2016 title, America Discovers C. S. Lewis. "Learning in War-Time" was actually the first sermon by Lewis and was given before he was well-known. Today it is best found in the collection The Weight of Glory. As with other "essay chats," the purpose of focusing on a single essay is to encourage you to read (or re-read) it and other essays by Lewis that are often neglected.
